Prospective studies of high-risk infants have provided a new window into early development in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), yielding new insights into early behavioral markers, developmental trajectories (including regression), and the interface between ASD and the broader autism phenotype. This research is also informing us about how aspects of clinical heterogeneity (e.g., symptom severity, cognitive level) evident at the time of diagnosis may influence early manifestations of ASD. This presentation will review the latest findings from 'baby sibs' research in ASD, with special reference to the Canadian Infant Sibling Study, which currently includes over 400 participants. Implications for early detection and diagnosis of ASD will be discussed.
