conference info: Understanding Cultures and Addressing Disparities in Social Justice, Access, Equity and Inclusion (2/11/2014) Disparities in the quality of life and access to opportunities, the loss of social mobility, the ever-growing global interdependency and ethical questions stemming from it, including the rapid transformation of daily life by climate change and new communication and biomedical technologies pose a growing challenge to our future. More than ever they dominate the discourse among those who work to understand the origins of these problems and find solutions to them, including artists, humanists and social scientists on the one hand and scientists, engineers, policy makers, and healthcare providers on the other. Addressing these concerns will require new intellectual investigations of humanists and social scientists in generating foundational knowledge about human cultures and behavior, both through in-depth local studies and broad comparative analyses; also of artists who open paths to deeper understanding and imagine possible new worlds; and, finally, of those who develop public policy and ethical guidelines, based on this knowledge. host links: UCSD Office of Research Affairs Web Site
