description:
Aging is a process of progressive somatic degeneration across many cells, tissues and organ systems. Rates of aging, however, are remarkably varied among species, among individuals, and even among ecotypes where environmental cues induce alternative life history modes, such as diapause. Insect diapause is associated with longevity assurance and mutational analyses have uncovered signaling networks that can increase longevity by mimicking this diapause-related slow-aging system. Two key regulators include insulin signaling and juvenile hormone. Recent work with Drosophila will be presented to describe how these hormones mediate aging by coordinating the functions among tissues, and how insights from this model genetic system can be applied to understand human aging.
