description:
Will professors one day lecture classes from remote locations via avatars? Is an artificial agent just as effective as a speech therapist or a addictions counselor as a real person? Or do the cost savings and increased accessibility of these systems compromise the quality of the service? Will parents be buying their children robot pets or friends anytime soon? Can one fall in love with a robot? Why do humans make social artificial agents? How can we increase the success of such technologies? How can technological developments be harnessed in a way that maximizes human creativity? How can we design systems that can help us to transcend the challenges we face today? Our work relates to cutting-edge developments in science and technology, but also addresses fundamental questions about human nature.
